– Sweetie Belle's posthumous confessional to Zecora
Starmetal is a unique, extraterrestrial mineral that comes from outside Equestria. It is commonly found in asteroids, meteorites, and other rocky bodies found in space.
Starmetal first arrived on Equestria inside a meteor that landed not far from the Castle of the Princesses Celestia and Luna in Everfree Forest. Luna found the meteor and forged a unique set of armor from it, that would become the signature armor of Nightmare Moon.
The Starmetal armor was mostly destroyed and shattered when the Elements of Harmony were used again on Nightmare Moon a thousand years after her initial banishment. A piece of the armor survived and was kept by Luna in a small box, which was entrusted to Midnight Shower, her royal astronomer. Midnight Shower took the piece of star metal to Zebratown to learn of their fears and superstitions regarding Luna and Starmetal. The same piece of Starmetal was later discovered by Doctor Glue, a scientist working with Red Eye at the time and was tasked with studying it for them, his research notes told that the Metal itself wasn't "cursed" in any way, and theorizing that the meteor that fell in the Everfree Forest long ago possibly contained a microorganism that mutated and infected the forests ecosystem.
A cornerstone was left in Zecora's hut, it was from a boulder that came off of the meteorite that landed a thousand years ago, Sweetie Belle -while excavating the area for the construction of Stable 101- decided to cut the boulder to make the cornerstone as an apology, while leaving behind a posthumous confessional for Zecora. Xenith, completely overcome with anger towards her people for ignorantly starting a war with Equestria all those years ago because of a simple rock from space, crushed the cornerstone in outright anger.
The Star Blasters are possibly made from Starmetal.

The zebra were said to have worshiped the stars thousands of years ago. One city actually tried to call down a star and ended up wiping out their city, the star becoming buried far beneath Equestria's soil.
Rise of Nightmare Moon
The zebra as a people had recovered from their civilization's first fall. Princess Luna forged the armor of Nightmare Moon from Starmetal she recovered from a meteor and waged war with her sister, cementing the zebra's fear of Starmetal, and convincing them it had corrupting/dangerous properties.
The land over the first zebra civilization was later settled by ponies who built the smaller settlement of Hoofington over it.
During the War
When the zebra attacked and destroyed Hoofington, the ponies rebuilt it bigger and better and constructed a large number of underground tunnels. The ancient star the zebra supposedly called down, appears to have been a massive meteor or asteroid filled with Starmetal. Equestrians experimented with Starmetal, using it to coat Discord's statue and prevent him from escaping. Other researchers and scientists such as Mr. Horse and Trottenheimer also used Starmetal in experiments.
Zebra Remnants continue to hunt for Starmetal fragments so that they may hide them and prevent them from causing further harm.

During the War
Starmetal found in Caledonia during the war proved to have very different effects from the star metal in Hoofington. The Starmetal proved to be heavily poisonous and capable of causing necrotic damage to limbs that would rot them and force their amputation. Without amputation, victims of Starmetal poisoning would usually die, painfully, within hours of exposure. Even with amputation, a subject would not be expected to live more than a year; depending on level of contamination, the efficiency of the amputation and the general health of the subject. For unknown reasons Hired Gun currently appears to be an exception to this rule.
A large supply of these bullets were discovered in Marefort by Hired Gun and her brother. The bullets were confiscated by the Crimson Hoof, after they killed the town's mayor for trying to deny them access to the bullets. Hired Gun was shot by one of these poisonous bullets, but survived and had her left leg amputated and replaced with a cyberlimb.
The exact properties are unknown. It was suggested that an alien bacteria may have been responsible for Luna's change, not the metal itself, Doctor Glue, while studying a piece of Nightmare Moon's armor that was recovered from Zebratown; came to a possibility that the same unknown organism might be also responsible for the twisted and dangerous ecosystem found in the Everfree Forest. It can be molded into armor and weapons like traditional metals found on Equestria.

Starmetal is capable of cancelling out other frequencies, including magic, making it resistant to magical attacks. Starmetal only resonates at one frequency. When Starmetal comes into contact with Moon Rock it causes an explosive reaction that generates a lot of radiation. The reaction caused by Starmetal and moon rock interacting is what makes Trottenheimer's Folly so destructive, as it uses both materials in its unique ammunition, Silver Bullet

Starmetal, when fired in bullet form, causes a unique form of poisoning that is almost always fatal. The bullets are known to glow a multitude of colours and turn affected limbs necrotic, requiring immediate amputation. Hired Gun is a pony who survived being shot by a Starmetal bullet.

Starmetal can be refined into a much lighter and near-indestructible material known as Starsteel. This process can only be performed by the powerful magic of an alicorn, and it is implied that only Princess Luna knew the secret to this. Princess Luna's personal guard, the Lunar Guard wore this unique Starsteel armor, imbued with the first gem-powered spell matrices of their kind. Frost Windchill owns a set of this armor.

Motor Runner's skin has been infused with a coating of the Star Metal, found within Hoofington. His star metal skin makes him practically immune to magic as it only resonates at one magical frequency and destroys all others. His skin also makes him bulletproof, negating the need for barding and protection like regular ponies.
- Starmetal is feared by the majority of Zebra, believed to be dangerous and evil.
- In many side stories, Starmetal is considered to be a super strong alloy, which makes it similar to Saturnite from Fallout New Vegas in both name and function.
