Rotting Tail, more commonly known as Sheriff Rotting Tail, was a ghoul that lead a large following of ghouls, determined to gain entry to Tenpony Tower.
Nothing is known about Rotting Tail's history, although he was possibly a pre-war sheriff and kept the title after becoming a ghoul.
Rotting Tail became the leader of a large number of ghouls, who were seen as a threat by the bigoted security chief of Tenpony Tower, Chief Grim Star. Rotting Tail knew of a underground tunnel in a building near Tenpony Tower that was full of feral ghouls and was planning on unleashing them on the tower if they were forced to try and gain entry. Rotting Tail was killed by Blackwing's Talon's who were hired by Grim Star to kill him. Killing the ghoul turned the rest of his followers hostile, they were wiped out by the talons in self defense.
Littlepip later discovers the bodies of Rotting Tail and his followers and arranges a large funeral pyre for them, instead of leaving them to rot. The slaughter of Rotting Tail and his followers was later broadcast by DJ Pon3 as a unprovoked massacre, Grim Star refusing to comment on the action.
Rotting Tail is one of the main characters of The Ditzy Doo Chronicles.

The Last Day
Rotting Tail, originally called Lone Star, went to Appleloosa to find his Nephew Crumble. Rotting Tail and Crumble leave Appleloosa together, travelling across the desert around Appleloosa. Rotting Tail and Crumble became ghouls due to exposure from excessive ambient radiation, carried by sandstorms.
One of Rotting Tails legs was badly injured whilst shielding Crumble from the sandstorm, leaving him with a permanent limp. Rotting Tail and Crumble eventually arrive in Trottingham, where they help establish the ghoul settlement of Necropolis. Rotting Tail settles into the role of town sheriff/leader.
Forty Years Later
Rotting Tail meets Ditzy Doo and May, when they arrive in Necropolis and are advised to go and meet him by the guards. After their introduction, Ditzy and May learn about stable 12, which is why they came to Trottingham in the first place. Rotting Tail has been looking for an excuse to go into the stable and put the feral ghoul ponies out of their misery, but the feral ghoul numbers had discouraged him and the other residents of the town.
Rotting Tail accompanies Ditzy and May into the stable, where they devise a plan that has Ditzy and Rotting Tail lure the majority of the feral ghouls, away from the medical section of the Stable, thus giving May the opportunity to find information on ghoulification research that Dr. Fixit had been working on.
Rotting Tail and DItzy fight off numerous feral ghouls, but Rotting Tail is injured, forcing them to take refuge in a toilet. Ditzy and Rotting Tail ambush their feral pursuers and use grenades to kill off a large number of the largest feral ghoul group in the stable. Rotting Tail and DItzy eventually catch up with May and learn about Stable-Tec's experiment for this stable. They destroy any records of what Stable-Tec did, not wanting to cause the ghouls of Necropolis further grief.
Eighty Years Later
Over the next forty years, Rotting Tail and Ditzy Doo have started a relationship, Crumble even calling her his aunt. Rotting Tail is a pillar of the Necropolis community, helping to keep the ghouls together. He greets Ditzy Doo when she returns to Necropolis from a two week, trading trip, along with a ghoul trader they rescued, named Flam.
After having sex, Ditzy confides in Rotting Tail, her concerns for May and her Dash usage. Rotting Tail encourages Ditzy to go and confront May, by telling her a story of how he got Braeburn to stop drinking excessively, after a falling out between Braeburn and Applejack.
Rotting Tail enters Necropolis's local bar, The Watering Hole, hearing a commotion and discovers Ditzy accosting Flam who sold May and enhanced version of Dash called Ultra-Dash that May was reacting to negatively. Flam advises they look inside the local Ministry of Morale Hub, where they will most likely find a Dash Purger. Ditzy and Rotting Tail depart, Rotting Tail running, despite his bad leg.
Upon arriving, they find a Sprite-bot inside the Hub, which tries to deny them access to the facility. Rotting Tail prepares to shoot it, but Ditzy stops him, knowing it has a lethal energy weapon, built into it. Ditzy uses a code phrase she once heard May use and gets the Sprite-bot to remain neutral, Ditzy begins pleading with the sprite-bot for information on the Dash purger, which causes a new voice to take over the sprite-bot and inform Ditzy the formula is on Floor five, inside a safe.
Reaching Floor five, Rotting Tail and Ditzy search the floor, before finding the hidden safe. Rotting Tail uses a ring of keys he found earlier to open the safe and Ditzy carries him back to Necropolis, his bad leg, becoming extremely strained due to all of his galloping. Rotting Tail uses a leg brace for the next couple of days as May recovers from her Dash usage, before the injury is finally healed.
Necropolis is soon attacked by Steel Rangers, lead by their Elder, Emerald. Rotting Tail tries to negotiate for a peaceful solution, but the Rangers won't listen, knocking him off of the town's walls. The ghouls begin attacking the Rangers in retaliation. Rotting Tail heads to Necropolis's armory with Ditzy to acquire heavier firepower, but the armory and sheriff's office is destroyed and Rotting Tail's nephew is soon discovered dead inside.
Enraged, Rotting Tail takes several combat drugs and runs off into the battle. He attacks several Rangers and provides several citizens with the opportunity to escape, as well as managing to kill a few Rangers as well. Rotting Tail is pulled to safety by May, who had to sedate him due to the combat drug influence. Rotting Tail and the surviving ghouls soon meet a glowing ghoul named Bright Light.
Bright Light teleports the survivors after supercharging herself with radiation, outside the edge of Stalliongrad, where she and her followers have established a ramshackle town around a crashed Raptor class cloudship, that they are working to repair. Rotting Tail assists the ghouls, by trying to help get their ship's plasma cannon operational, once more. Rotting Tail hijacks the Cloudship on the day it is supposed to take off, everyone else is either sleeping or preparing for their great journey.
Rotting Tail intends to use the Cloudship to avenge the destruction of Trottingham, but relents at Ditzy Doo's insistence. Bright Light, feeling that Rotting Tail is too full of anger and hatred, informs him that she will be leaving him behind in Equestria. Ditzy and May decide to stay with him, finding the thought of abandoning him, unbearable.
The trio of ghouls after being teleported near Stalliongrad, are approached by a unicorn mare, named Bonus Track. Bonus Track wanting to hear the full story about the warship, brings Rotting Tail and his friends to the Stalliongrad Suites hotel. There May tells Bonus Track the full story, including how she and the others ended up onboard and how they survived Necropolis's demise.
Rotting Tail and Ditzy have a conversation in Bonus Track's room, sharing a moment to themselves over everything they've lost. Rotting Tail, Ditzy and May assist Bonus Track and the Town guard with a stake out, looking for whoever has been abducting ponies for the last month. Bonus Track is kidnapped, but May is able to track her PipBuck tag to a Ministry of Image Hub, wherein they run into a griffin talon, Gnarl Grimfeathers.
Initially distrustful of Gnarl, Rotting Tail works with the talon and together, they find Bonus Track and her captor. Her captor is a unicorn ghoul, gone crazy as he tries to ressurect Rarity, using the unicorns he has been taking from Stalliongrad.
The ghoul proves to be a powerful foe, destroying Ditzy's weapon, severing one of Gnarl's wings as well as stopping bullets and laser beams fired from Gnarl's weapons. May is unable to disarm the ghoul, due to his peculiar weapon actually resisting her magicical grip. Rotting Tail rapid fires his two rifles and then catches the ghoul by surprise by pulling out his revolver and firing all six shots seemingly simultaneously. The sixth bullet breaks through the ghoul unicorn's defences and shatters his horn as well as killing him.
Rotting Tail assists in the burial of the crazed ghoul, revealed to be Snips and the cremation of his victims.
Rotting Tail was clearly charismatic, given the large number of followers he acquired. He was adamant about gaining entry to Tenpony Tower, due to the better living conditions and was prepared to use force to get in. He was said to have been going mad/feral by Blackwing when she spoke to Littlepip and her friends, after their rescue from Horseshoe Tower.
